Honouring Europe’s finest businesses

I would like to offer my congratulations to each of the 100 businesses from across Europe that were just announced as Ruban D’Honneur finalists in the European Business Awards. RSM has been a supporter of the European Business Awards for many years and I have had the privilege of being a previous judge, so I am well aware of the high standards these businesses must achieve to get this far.

In particular though, I would like to congratulate the ten finalists in the RSM Entrepreneur of the Year award category. In a week when the European commission presented an action plan to encourage entrepreneurship and kick-start growth, it is timely to be honouring these dynamic and innovative business leaders who will help to create jobs and wealth through establishing and developing excellent businesses.

The RSM Entrepreneur of the Year finalists are:

  • Biofilter Environmental Co (Hungary)
  • Bonnyfood A.Ş. (Turkey)
  • HintTech (The Netherlands)
  • LAMDA Hellix Data Centers (Greece)
  • Masmovil (Spain)
  • Michael Henriksen Holding A/S (Denmark)
  • MindZet (Denmark)
  • Netigate (Sweden)
  • PARAVAN GmbH (Germany)
  • The Cambridge Satchel Company (United Kingdom)

You can watch video profiles of these companies and the other category finalists at here.

Good luck to all of the Ruban D’Honneur recipients in the final round of judging.

Diversification key to success as entrepreneurial businesses feel the squeeze

Among the highlights of this year’s RSM annual conference was the inspirational presentation by Duncan Goose, founder and Managing Director of Global Ethics, owner of the One brand. Duncan shared his story as to how he took a business idea for bottled water from a chat with friends in a London pub, to the shelves of major supermarkets across three continents. The branding and business model is very powerful. Each One product funds a directly related project in sub-Saharan Africa. The profits from the sale of One Water go directly to fund water projects, while the profits from One Supersoftly Toilet Tissue fund hygiene and sanitation projects, and so on.

A profile of Duncan Goose in the Daily Telegraph earlier this week, addressed some of the issues which Duncan – and undoubtedly many other entrepreneurs – are grappling with right now. Businesses supplying the retail sector are feeling the squeeze as supermarkets reduce the number of brands they stock, and put pressure on the remaining brands to offer promotions. The rewards of doing business with a large multinational supermarket can be immense, but entrepreneurial businesses who do not manage the relationship carefully, can find that the coveted contract they have secured can be a curse almost as much as it is a blessing.

Partly as a consequence, One is diversifying into energy and financial services. This is a smart move, as not only does it allow One to shield itself against supermarkets rationalising their product lines, but it also taps into the current consumer disillusionment with energy and financial services providers in the UK. Duncan Goose thinks that customers buying electricity through One should also save £80-£100 on yearly bills, as well as doing some good. What’s not to love about that?

Duncan provided some fascinating insights into how his business has become so successful and alluded to some of the trade-offs that all small businesses have to make, such as how much profit should you reinvest to grow a business, balanced against how much you should distribute to shareholders? In One’s case though, the shareholders are communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

It was a fascinating insight into a business and entrepreneur who many RSM members have said was one of the highlights of this year’s annual conference.

RSM UK member firm backs Fast Track 100 entrepreneurs

I am delighted to see that UK member firm, RSM Tenon, are involved in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100, alongside other sponsors; Barclays and Virgin. The Fast Track 100 ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the fastest-growing sales and in previous years has spotted many of Britain’s brightest companies before they became household names. Initiatives such as this, and the European Business Awards that RSM is also involved with, helps to recognise the achievements of businesses and entrepreneurs, so many of whom provide inspiration for the next generation and whose sheer dedication has lead to their success in today’s difficult economic times.

Good luck to the next generation of growing stars in the UK and across Europe.

The smell of success – beauty company entrepreneurs turn €7 thousand into €77 million

The winners of the RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year title at the European Business Awards (EBA) are the founders of Maesa Group, Julien Saada and Gregory Mager.

The Maesa Group is one of Europe’s fastest growing and most comprehensive resource for “Beauty on Demand” products and services. With offices in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, the company is responsible for signature perfumes for Kim Kardashian, Mary J. Blige and Oscar De La Renta.

Our European Director, Robert Coles, got the chance to speak to Julien Saada at the EBA Winners Conference in Rome yesterday, where he heard about their experience first-hand. This is what he had to say…

What ignited the spark to start a new business venture? How did the idea for your business come about?

When my childhood friend Gregory Mager and I were just finishing university at 22 years old – 15 years ago – it was unusual for recent graduates to launch their own business or activity. Still, we wanted to be independent and take destiny in our hands. We were very young with a lot of energy and without financial commitments, but still naïve and lacking a clear business plan or capital.

We noticed that many retail shops in the US were beginning to expand their product range by selling branded beauty products – in some cases, 20% of the stock was beauty products. We foresaw that this model would spread to Europe and with only €7,000 decided to start our own business.

The desire to start a business and have a clear market vision ignited the initial spark. We were graduates with a bright idea – who better to be an entrepreneur?

What is your advice for those starting out in business? Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

During the early stages it is important to focus on three things:

1) The product concept – Is there a market? Are you answering a gap in market or creating a market? Ultimately, is your product unique?
2) The customer – The customer needs to come first, before the business approach and even the product.
3) The cash – A company cannot start or survive without sufficient funds. It is essential to sort out capital right at the beginning.

What motivates you to continue growing?

First of all, we are responsible for 220 people all over the world – not only in France, but also in China, the US and the UK. We have the responsibility to maintain and grow the business for our employees.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to invest in a small but growing market. I’m motivated by the fact that this market is wide and getting wider – more people want to grow their beauty brands and require help during the various stages of development.

We’re pleased that our 2011 turnover was €77 million, but after 15 years of work and investment, we are pushed to achieve even more.

How do you define success?

For me, the success of a business is dependent on stability, growth and sustainability. At a minimum, the business must have the ability to sustain its suppliers and its people. It also needs to keep its door continually open. Then, the business needs to sustain a good level of at least 10-15% sales profit before tax. Although you can have a stable business, you need to complement that with growth and sustainability for true success.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

In 2008/9 we completed four international acquisitions – two in Europe and two in the US. It took two and half years to complete the process as it was a very difficult time for France economically. However, despite the challenges we managed to multiply the business by four. This fantastic growth is certainly a highlight in Maesa’s history with expansion both within and outside of the continent.

Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?

Maesa Group will continue to grow as a business –that’s for sure. We expect to double the company’s size in 3-5 years and expand in emerging in countries. As for me, I expect to focus on Maesa Group as it keeps me happy in my professional life.

It is inspiring to hear about Maesa Group and its founders’ entrepreneurialism. Even though they started this company some time ago, the values of hard work, innovation and the passion to succeed in business still resonate today. Maesa’s experience proves that these principles are essential regardless of company industry or size. We are pleased to continue promoting these values through our support of EBA’s RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year.”

Fairtrade – Making a Difference

Last week I spoke to you all about the European Business Awards – an independent awards programme that celebrates the successes of businesses and leaders throughout Europe. During the awards ceremony held in Paris, I was particularly moved by the story of the company who won The Award for Corporate Sustainability, The Fairtrade Foundation. Interested in learning more about their history and vision, I met yesterday with Frances Robathan, Fairtrade’s Head of Fundraising, and was inspired by her enthusiasm and the Fairtrade story.

Established in 1992, The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation that licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE mark on products in the UK in accordance with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. Their vision is of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade structures and practices so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood and develop their full potential. This vision certainly resonates with me.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said “He who moves not forward, goes backward.” The environment and the world are changing and it is up to business leaders to look inward at their policies and practices and begin implementing environmentally sustainable business models. How do we do this?  It is about asking the right questions, being aware of what is available on the market and associating ourselves with the right products and companies. It is about, where possible, getting employees and clients involved and committed to doing business in a more socially responsible way.

Whether it’s printing double-sided to conserve paper, setting up recycling bins or making a commitment, as the RSM Executive Office has done, to purchasing Fairtrade products whenever possible, what is important is that we start taking steps – no matter how small – towards improvement and changing not only our practices, but also our mindset.

Celebrating Entrepreneurship

In tough economic times, entrepreneurship and innovation are more important than ever as companies and businesses continue to battle in an ever-crowded market place. An entrepreneurial spirit can make the difference between win and lose as the competition toughens. However, entrepreneurship does not come as standard and those who do it well should be recognised for their achievements. This year, we are celebrating entrepreneurship through our sponsorship of the European Business Award’s (EBA) Entrepreneur of the Year award. The EBA is an independent Awards programme designed to recognise and promote excellence, best practice and innovation in the European business community.

At RSM International, our member firms work with many young, dynamic and growing businesses and sponsoring these awards is our way of showing support for the entrepreneurs who push their businesses through adversity to succeed.

Speaking of best practice and innovation, Duncan Goose (a previous recipient of the RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year Award) comes to mind. His story is an interesting and inspiring one. Duncan quit his lucrative job in advertising to set up the not-for-profit organisation Global Ethics, with the aim to raise funds for projects in developing countries. His company launched ‘One Water’, a brand of ethical bottled water whose profits go to providing water solutions in Africa. This also demonstrates how success comes in many forms and entrepreneurship is not just about growth and impressive balance sheets, but also about having a visionary approach and the leadership and management skills to turn these visions into reality. There is no doubt hard work also has a large part to play in this inspiring story.

In 2010 the Awards engaged with over 15,000 companies and included entries from a very diverse group of businesses across all economies in Europe.

The European Business Awards 2011 are currently open for entries.
